The beautiful, Miss District of Columbia, Deshauna Barber, with her merit and talent slayed her way to the top of the competition and took home the 2016 Miss USA Crown. For the very first time in Miss USA history, the top 5 finalists were of diverse ethnic backgrounds breaking the usual stereotypical makeup of pageant finalists. There were two Black women, one Latina, one Caucasian and one Hawaiian. Even further, women of color reigned supreme in the top three with Miss Hawaii, Chelsea Keolan, as first runner up, followed by Miss Georgia, Emanii Davis.
It wasn't just Miss District of Columbia's beauty that won her the crown; it was her powerful message of strength.
When asked about the military's ability to continue performing at the highest level now that Pentagon has opened all combat positions to women. Barber replied "As a woman in the United States Army, I think it was an amazing job by our government to allow women to integrate to every branch of the military, we are just as tough as men. As a commander of my unit, I am powerful; I am dedicated, and it is important that we recognize that gender does not limit us in the United States Army,”
The 26-year-old Logistics Commander for the U.S. Army is also employed by the Department Commerce as an IT Analyst. Barber's passion is to "serve the men and women in the U.S. Military" and she will use her platform to focus on "PTSD treatment for soldiers returning from deployment..." (Hello Beautiful)
Congratulations Miss USA 2016, Deshauna Barber! Thank you for your service! Wear your crown, you deserve it!
